Acupuncture is a therapy that originated in China over 5,000 years ago. It affects health by regulating the flow of “qi” (chee) which is the vital life force or energy present in all living organisms. Qi circulates in the body along 12 major energy pathways known as meridians that are linked to specific tissues, organs and glands.
Hundreds of acupuncture points, known as acupoints, exist within the meridian system that can be stimulated to enhance the flow of qi using tiny acupuncture needles inserted into the skin. This helps to correct and regulate the flow of energy and consequently relieve pain and/or restore health.
Acupuncture is especially useful for the treatment and management of pain. A few well placed needles in specific acupoints can have a dramatic impact upon the severity and frequency of pain that results from trauma and surgery or sprains and strains.
An acupuncture treatment is virtually painless with only mild sensations that tend to be very brief and transient. A typical treatment takes about 30-45 minutes and more than one session is usually recommended. Most people experience a profound sense of calm and relaxation during and after the treatment.
